Personality Zhen is a very headstrong young woman, extremely aggressive and is very sensitive about others pointing out her flaws, both mental and physical. Prone to fits of self-destructive impulse, Zhen is a reckless and foolhardy girl who prefers a good party to the trials of reality. Despite all her flaws and downfalls Zhen cares deeply for her sister Aratani and tries her utmost to be supportive of her. This care for her sister runs to the extent of both causing problems for Aratani and herself, often “protecting” her sister even/especially when she doesn’t need it.
History Nauja was a beautiful woman from the Northern Water Tribe who all men chased for her talents when it came to waterbending. She was an exceptional woman with a quick wit and even quicker quips. Firelord Hiroshi, on the other hand, had little interest in most women. He usually only wanted them for a couple of hours before moving on. The day that the two met, he was in the Northern Water Tribe on official business. Nauja, who usually never feel for the charm of men was lured into the firelord’s trap. Not long after, she became pregnant. Firelord Hiroshi was a very difficult man to contact. She had to jump through hoops in order to even let him know that she was pregnant but he honestly didn’t seem to care until she spread word about his say as a firelord, which caused him to start paying her a fair amount of money. However, that was not what Nauja wanted. She just wanted the father of her child to be in their lives when they actually came into the world. Unfortunately, that never happened. The thing about Nauja’s pregnancy was that she was pregnant with not only one but two children. They were born with ease and held the same physical aspects at first. Aside from Aratani’s small beauty mark under her eye, they were near indistinguishable. The two grew up quite happy and were raised to understand that their father was the firelord in the Fire Nation but were also told to be very cautious of him. Nauja finally messaged the father of her two children back to offer him some information. He seemed thrilled at first and even went as far as to request for the both of them to visit him. Nauja was reluctant at first to allow them to travel to the Fire Nation but finally allowed them to go and see their father. Nauja refused to enter the palace of the firelord and stayed in the city while her children met their father. Unfortunately, while in the city she underwent ridicule and discrimination for being a waterbender and a mistress of the firelord. While picking up a loaf of bread from the market, she turned down an alley on the way to the inn where she was staying when a man came out of nowhere and stabbed her multiple times, leaving her to bleed out in the streets. Word reached Hiroshi of Nauja’s death and he quickly changed his friendly attitude toward his children, no longer having to keep up the act of being a good father because their mother was now dead. The children were so young and rather confused by this but being the bastards of the firelord was not the funnest thing to be. The girls were ushered off to a small village on the edge of the Fire Nation, where a young of very religious old ladies took care of the pair until they were of age to be on their own. At the age of five, Aratani was the first to show her bending abilities when a boy tried to chuck a sack filled with water at her sister, which simply exploded back in his face. Once the secret was out that the bastard daughter of the firelord was also a waterbender, she underwent worse bullying than her dear sister, who proved to be a little delayed in development compared to Aratani. Zhen showed her firebending abilities when she was eight years old and often would protect Aratami. Due to the fact that she was bullied for being a waterbender in the Fire Nation, the girl often tried her best to restrict her bending to when no one was around. Somehow, people always found her and taunted her. Some even went as far as to physically assault her. The two ladies who looked after them took pity on Aratani for being a “pathetic little waterbender” and often tried to toughen her up with lots of chores. Eventually, Aratani ceased to bend altogether, bringing about a spell of immense depression. Zhen was absolutely saddened to see her twin so sad and promised that one day she would get them 0out of the Fire Nation and take them back home, where they actually belonged, in the Northern Water Tribe (which was not as versed in the act of discrimination). At the age of fifteen, they finally fled. The journey was long and harsh and brought about a lot of criminal acts where the two were forced to steal and stow away on ships in order to get to back home but when they finally did, they met a woman who claimed to be their mother’s sister. She was a kind woman with a gentle face and even warmer heart. She took the two of them in and even went as far as to introduce them to the tribe, who were thrilled to see the daughters of the woman that once was quite amazing back in her day. Machiro, a talented waterbender herself, put Aratani through an intensive waterbending training. Being so far behind, she had little time to play and have fun. She was always working heart and trying her best to get better at waterbending. Zhen often enjoyed watching her sister learn the art and was always there for extra support. Eventually, when they turned sixteen, Zhen and Aratani decided that they wanted to make a life for themselves in Republic City, a place that often was talked about for being renowned in diversity. Curious, they made their way there.
