Shyo is a tall, lanky character, standing at 6'2" with short dark brown hair, piercing green eyes that seem a little cold and distant, a thick handlebar mustache, a very chiseled jawline and dark-ish skin. His shoulders are moderately broad but there is a little bit of muscle around there. Since arriving, the fighting and the better diet have allowed him to bulk a little, up to 185 pounds. He has a wonderful collection of scars. Starting from the top down, he has two running down his right cheek, a long one from top to bottom of his back, three claw marks across his stomach, burn scars across his right forearm, and several marks on his left calf. Clothing wise, all he owns is a black singlet with a hole torn in the back, scuffed long khaki pants with holes in the knees and open-toed brown sandals.


As a young child, Shyo was gentle and withdrawn. This attitude affected his ability to earthbend. However, after hearing some unkind remarks from his father, his whole outlook on life changed. He became hardened and stubborn, but still idealistic. Once he was mentally strong enough to bully earth into working for him, he was ready to let rip.

Shyo prides himself on his honesty, regardless of whether people want to hear it or not. He'll say what's on his mind, when it's on his mind. Tell the lady she looks fat in that dress? Absolutely. Call out the gang attacking the old lady and condemn all their actions? Why not? He also has severe issues with corruption. Due to his upbringing, he goes to any length to stamp it out, often causing himself trouble. While his intentions may be noble, his methods aren't always. He firmly believes that justice can come from anyone, be it police officer or a very angry Shyo.

Stubbornness is another unattractive trait. He never backs down or changes his mind, although at times he can get quite introspective and question his every move as far back as he can remember. But those are just the bad days.

Shyo is also intensely loyal. He sticks up for any of his friends (or even acquaintances, for that matter), not matter how badly it might end up for him. In fact, he tends to stick up for anyone who might need it. Because of his impulsive need to help others, no matter the cost to him, he's become very tough. He can roll with any number of punches, no matter how much he aches. He's no fan of losing either, so he won't give up until he's out cold.

He's not okay with his weakened state of earthbending. Going from bending master to barely able to fling rocks around was not an easy transition and he's double determined to get back in the zone. In summary, Shyo is a practical but fair character, determined to rid any corruption out of the city and protect the vulnerable.

He has a fun streak in him, though. If he's in a good place mentally, he can be a little silly in the right situation.


 Shyo was born into a wealthy earth republic family. His father was the town's mayor, and due to ineffective earth republic leadership, may as well have been the king. His father ruled with an iron (and a tight) fist, running with ludicrous taxation and strict penalties for anyone who dared even hint they disliked him being in his position.

His father was an earthbender who expected Shyo, his eldest, to be able to bend at his standard. Shyo showed no signs of doing this until a little after his eighth birthday, after hearing some very unkind words from his father. This was a day of dramatic change for him. In a matter of hours, he went from a gentle, cheerful and a tad shy to a grim, stubborn, dry-witted individual.

At the academy for earthbending he attended, he began to meet people from all walks of life. Shyo began to realize the corruption his father was spreading and saw it's horrific downsides in the sick and hungry. After his closest friend at the academy eventually died from a combination of malnutrition and illness (in his arms, mind you), he promised himself that he would stop this madness. He was fourteen.

He spent the next year and a half working on his earthbending, pushing himself to a near master level control over the skill. Eventually, he challenged his father and his principles. After a dramatic confrontation, Shyo concluded his father would never changes his ways. He stormed out, made some obscene gestures, and redistributed his father's wealth. This action was worse than treason, so Shyo left the city, just shy of his sixteenth birthday.

After wandering around, hungry and dirt poor, he brutally attacked someone who tried to rob him. When the robber was turned into the guards, Shyo found there was a price on his head, and a fair sum. Money in hand, Shyo found bounty hunting to his liking, and decided to run with it. However, the life of an idealistic bounty hunter is not an easy one. His willingness to aggravate people in power lead to a bounty on his own head. After a long pursuit, a tired Shyo devised a plan to get himself out of trouble and rich enough to get out.

Shyo pulled up another bounty hunter and offered to turn himself in if the other party agreed to split the bounty and help him escape. However, the other bounty hunter double crossed him and took all the money and left him in custody. After some political motions from his father and various other petty officials in towns aggravated by his efforts, he was moved to a maximum security cell in Ba Sing Se.

Shyo spent an extended period of time in the wooden cell. He couldn't earthbend out, so he had to sit and plot. Slowly accumulating dirt off of guards clothes, he started to gather a small pile in his cell. Compressing it into a little blade, he slowly sawed at the wooden cell until the door was weakened. As soon as a guard tugged at it the wrong way, it fell off and Shyo jumped at his chance. Running out the door, he kept going and never looked back.

Once he got out, he knew he couldn't stay in the Earth Republic. The months in prison had severely affected his bending and he was in no shape to try and fight his way out of trouble. He stole from some bandits and used what contacts he had left to get a visa for Republic City, where he would be safe from the political backstabbing that the Earth Republic has always been good at. When he arrived off the boat, all he had was a small amount of yuans and the clothes on his back. This city was going to be the fresh start he needed.

After arriving, Shyo found himself begging and scavenging for food before being caught up in a fight with some dodgy police officers and some gang members. It was while meeting these gang members that he heard a commotion and ran into a warehouse full of faceless members and journalists. Ending up as the center of attention, he pushed as many people as he could to go to the southern wastes to assist the avatar.

  • Earth Bomb

The user can send a small boulder flying in any direction once struck which breaks apart into many smaller projectiles when it hits something.

  • Earth Smash

The user is able to crush or even shatter anything made of stone without any force required.

  • Earth Shield

The user is able to create a small wall made of stone which can be used to defend or obstruct a path.

  • Earth Levitation (Passive)

The user is able to cause earth to levitate allowing them to use any earth they control as a moderate defense or even to allow time to prepare an attack.

  • Compression Control (Passive)

The user is able to compress earth into a much denser state allowing them to harden soil or stone for stronger offense or defense. The user must take time to compress the earth.

Basic Powers

  • Fissure

The user is able to create small fissures by striking the ground which produce tremors in order to disorient or even knock over others. (Achieved after 1 week)

  • Earth Column

The user is able to force sharp columns of stone out of the ground that can be used to cut or even stab others as well as obstruct paths. (Achieved after 2 weeks)

  • Earth Launch

The user is able to create jets of stone out of the ground which can be used to launch things into the air as well as a sort of spring to soften falls from high distances.

  • Rock Gloves/Shoes

The user is able to create gloves and shoes out of stone to be used for enhanced melee attacks as well as used as projectiles to bind others. The user can not use any other form of earthbending while controlling the gloves or shoes.

  • Earth Armor (Exclusive to Stone Guardian)

The user is able to surround their entire body in gem which enhances their melee attacks as well as defends against attacks against them. The user is slowed considerably while wearing the armor. Users also have the option of coating their bodies in regular stone, this armor would reduce mobility restrictions, stone would be easier to gather than crystal and stone is obviously easier to break than crystal.

  • Earth Sink (Exclusive to Stone Guardian)

The user can sink enemies and objects into the ground, trapping them within the earth. Sinks take a moment to form and only a maximum of two can be sustained at once. Requires line of sight.

Advanced Powers

(Note: Once a power is chosen, it cannot be changed. Also, Master level powers can only be achieved after 7 months and require 2 open power slots.)

  • Earth Wave

The user is able to manipulate the top soil of the ground into a sort of wave in order to move more quickly as well as topple others off their feet. (Achieved after 2 months)

  • Lavabending (Passive; require 2 open slots)

The user is able to bend the earth around them into a molten state, or vice versa. This power has very high offensive and defensive potential but requires the user to be very close in order to use it, which also puts them at risk from the heat and gasses given off. Sustained use of this power will begin to cause these ill effects to after the user. NOTE: This power is illegal to use. (Achieved after 7 months)
