|Arika Kataka |
(a.k.a. Nakura Kiyo)
Owned by Saiyala
Bender type: Nonbender
A short haired natural blonde with dark blue eyes, who stands at 5' even, Nakura Kiyo admits there are curvier, more interesting women in the world and hates them for it. Arika Kataka was a dark haired beauty however, who's long flowing locks were her pride. While there's little she can do about her figure, she knows that a cursory investigation into her origins would show that a blonde woman would definitely not fit the description. As such, she is dying her hair to match Kataka's color and claiming she cut it short. After all, if she's changing her entire life in coming here, what's wrong with a few cosmetic changes to go with it.
Utterly patient, Nakura Kiyo is a hunter of people. She enjoys the challenge of getting to know about someone’s life, so that she can end it in the most personal and painful ways possible. She is a master of manipulation and lies, keeping massive webs of untruth straight in her mind. Like any liar, she will add enough truth into her tales to make sure none would question it as more than her interpretation of what is true and just enough untruth to convince others that her unspoken goals are the best possible path for them to take. This trait makes her a wonderful actor, willing to wear a new life, a new identity as easily as others might wear clothing. Kiyo will often ignore the suffering of others in what she sees as an overly light filled world. The darkness of casual cruelty just makes the world a little more balanced.
By contrast, Arika Kataka is a kind, innocent, unassuming woman with nothing to hide from anyone. She knows she was ill treated by her husband and this makes her a little shy of romance. She loves stories and will listen with the rapt attention of a child being read to at night. She sees the best in people and will go out of her way to make them feel at ease in her presence, even going so far as to try to be a dark and brooding person when she feels that is what will make someone most comfortable. Of course, being a joyful and caring person, she can never betray her nature for long and rather than being so dark, she ends up being comical, amusing such companions and bringing them out of their shells. That said, Kataka has a blind spot to pain and suffering if it isn’t brought directly to her attention. She’s not a fighter, just a woman who thinks everyone has the best interests of everyone in mind.
a few days before her arrival in Republic City
Nakura Kiyo pressed her shoulders harder against the back of her rocking chair as she pulled her legs up under her. She had just received the application paperwork for Republic city. It was written on paper the color of dry soil, with a long winded introduction that she knew was mostly going to be pointless self-aggrandizement. That could be read later, she decided.
She tucked her tongue in a corner of her cheek as she wrote “Arika Kataka” next to where it said Name. That would be a perfect alias. This was Ms. Arika’s home after all. She was out by the slop trough in the pig-fowl’s pen right now. No-one would ask questions. Was she a bender? Oh, definitely not. If Ms. Arika had had that kind of skill, this visit wouldn’t have gone nearly so smoothly.
‘Besides, it is best not to pretend to bending I can’t really do,’ she thought, pausing at the place it said age.
How old was Ms. Arika anyway? She didn’t look too much older than Kiyo after all. Her eyes wandered the room slowly as she considered and landed on a severed finger lying next to an overturned table. ‘It must be Ms. Arika’s,’ Kiyo thought, ‘I’ll toss it in the trough on my way out.’ Absently, she wrote in 19 where age was. That should be close enough, if they don’t do too much of a check with this town.
Appearance was next. She reached up and fiddled with her short blonde hair.
‘That won’t even pass a cursory check. I’ll have to dye it again,” Kiyo thought, with a frown. She let go of her hair. ‘Black it is then. I hope I can find the right dyes before this gets to the administration in RC. It might be worth visiting a photographer before sending this in, so I can send a picture of me in costume.’
Carefully, she wrote in a few details. Height at 5’, black hair and blue eyes. She knew her weight was somewhere between 75 and 120 pounds. Someday, she might get that exactly figured out, but not today. Kiyo pressed her lips together in thought, tapping a pen against her lip. Would Ms. Arika want to babble on about what she looked like? Would she brag about her boobs or her waistline? Some guys like that. Might win some approval from whoever is trying to decide her application’s approval.
She stretched back out, laying her heels crossed on the floor and sulking into the chair. This was the hard part for this. Who would she be? It could be fun to play at being gregarious, that would make guys easy to get into the chamber. She needed a lot of people to slaughter for Vaatu after all. The balance depends on there being a little bit of darkness in the world. It was a job her family had always excelled at.
With a sigh, she rested her chin on the arm of the chair and stared at the carpet she laid over the bloodstains from Ms. Arika’s death. It had a pleasing floral pattern to it, swooping and swaying like the ocean currents. That nice man who sold it to her before his death had told her it was made by the Southern Water Kingdom back when there was such a thing. He told her how it had been woven by an Avatar who had retired there, in fact. That had driven the price up another couple hundred coins. He had probably been lying, but the tale alone had been worth the expense. It’s not like he hadn’t given it all back to her before she added the third hot iron over his belly.
‘It really was nice of him,’ Kiyo thought, ‘I’ll be a nice girl, I think. In honor of his memory. No flirting for the sake of flirting. No dragging horny guys to the chambers.’
She sighed again and straightened up. A nice girl wouldn’t be bragging about her charms, she decided. It might not be as much fun to be a good girl, but it would keep suspicion off her longer. She wrote in a few random facts, like being pale skinned and having short hair. She wasn’t about to wear a wig for this city. If anyone heard about Ms. Arika’s flowing locks, she’ll just say she decided to change it after her husband vanished. Not that she didn’t know where he was. He was out feeding the pig-fowl too. Maybe that was his finger…. He would have survived this if he had just stayed with his mistress longer today. Poor girl. Maybe she should be given the chance to help keep the balance too.
Slowly a grin spread across Kiyo’s face as she started writing in about her personality. She talked about all the kind things she had done, including forgiving her unfaithful husband by leaving the house to him. She added a few references that could be followed up on. She had family in those roles still, if she recalled right. They knew that Ms. Arika was supposed to be her last assistant in this town. They’d give her good references if they were asked. At least they would in the next few months. Most of them were scheduled to move on before winter.
As a last note on her personality, she wrote how very honored she was to be considered as a potential citizen in Republic City. She knew all those civil servant types would eat that up. Then she read the next line. History. This had to be a joke. How the f--- was she supposed to know where Ms. Arika came from.
Kiyo took a deep breath and tried to think this through. The wines she drank with Ms. Akira before her passing were still in Kiyo’s system a little. She didn’t have her big sister’s tolerance for alcohol. It always made her thinking slower. Vile stuff. If it weren’t for the need to deal with this before there were any authorities involved, she’d have waited until tomorrow to fill out the application.
She looked around the room for inspiration and her eyes fell across the bouquet of flowers that Ms. Arika’s husband had brought for her to appease his guilt.
“Guilt!” Kiyo said suddenly, “That’s just what I need right now!”
Throwing aside her papers, Kiyo leapt from the chair, planning out the next few hours carefully. She started darting around the room, cleaning it up, righting the tables, cleaning up some spilled blood and wine. She picked up the lost finger and looked around with pride. This room obviously never had anything happen in it. Well, so long as no one tries to move the carpet.
She ran out the door excitedly, making a beeline for the pig-fowl trough. She looked over the fence at the pigs sleeping off their meal. It looked like Ms. Arika was already almost gone. That was good. Her guy was still mostly there though. Fresh enough for what she wanted.
Slipping her arms under his armpits, she dragged what remained of his body out of the trough and to the barn. She tossed a blanket over it and then threw a couple of rakes over that. Casual slovenliness. The best way to hide him for now.
Then she washed up and started down the lane. He had a lover. Everyone knew it. She just needed to have a little chat with the woman. The town was small enough that everyone knew about everyone. She was bound to know Ms. Arika’s parents names, if nothing else. A little bit of snooping from there and she could learn more about Ms. Arika’s life than the woman probably had ever realized about herself!
A few hours later, Kiyo was back in the chair. A busty blonde woman was passed out drunk across from her, in another chair. Her name was Miwa. Considering the low cut and overly tight outfit she wore, it was no wonder what Karoa saw in her. Kiyo wished she could forget that name. Karoa, Karoa, Karoa...
It was like a sour taste in her mouth. The woman had been gushing about how Kataka had stolen him away so long ago. According to her, Arika Kataka had been the daughter of a herder, with her only benefit being the fact her father, Arika Toki, owned his land as the grandson of a minor lord and wanted to give the place to his daughter’s husband. It was clearly the lure of a farm and a nice pair of legs that would open to any strong hand that drew HER Karoa to that marriage.
‘Obviously it wasn’t your nasal whiny voice and certainty the world was unfair to you that drove him to marry another woman,’ Kiyo thought while looking at Miwa, ‘He traded up.’
Of course, Ms. Arika’s mother, Seleia, had been all for the marriage too. She had been younger back then and it appears that Karoa had been enjoying her bed too. It made things easier for her to have him in the same house. Fewer questions to be asked. Supposedly it was a couple years after that that Arika Toki had left the region to retire and was never heard from again. Kiyo idly daydreamed for a bit, twiddling a pen in her fingers. Perhaps the pig-fowl ate well that night too.
Kiyo shook herself from her reverie with a start. She must have dozed off. It had been a long day of work, taking care of this mess. She was getting tired. That wouldn’t do at all. She reached over to check Miwa’s pulse. It had finally stopped. She smiled now; the poison in the wine had finally done its job. The world was a nicer place, now that Miwa was no longer a part of it, in her opinion.
With a bit of huffing, Kiyo hauled the much bigger woman to the pig-fowl pen. She glanced over to check their trough. It was empty, a good thing. Fewer questions. She stood Miwa’s body up and held it for a moment, then let go. It fell in an undignified heap against the fence. The big black pig fowl had snuffled over, to see what was happening.
“Be patient, I’m getting your food big guy,” she murmured as she reached in to scratch the animal gently behind an ear.
The beast flopped on its side, snorting contentedly. Kiyo scampered off to collect the body of Karoa. She spit in his face. He clearly deserved his end today, the bastard. Not like his wife. She was probably the nicest, most innocent person in this town. There was a certain satisfaction in knowing the woman would live on through Kiyo’s work in Republic City.
She shoved the body into the trough and stepped back to see what it looked like. After a moment, she rolled an empty vial next to Miwa’s left hand. It smelled pungently of a common enough poison. Now it looked like a jilted lover killing her object of desire before her suicide. She was ready to go get the cops to clean up the mess. But first thing first. She had an application to finish up and get sent off.
Curling back up in the chair she had begun to build a fondness for, she wrote in a more forgiving version of the history that that bitch had told her. She wrote in her parent’s names as Toki and Seleia, innocently omitting their family names. An accident like that was easy enough to forgive and it would make her seem like she needed the care of such a city. The next line about Alignment made her pause.
‘Who in their right mind would say anything other than Lawful Good?’ she thought, knowing that she was clearly more of a Neutral Evil by their standards.
Quickly, she wrote in Lawful Good. Then Kiyo got to the last line on the application and nearly dropped her pen with shock.
‘What the hell do they need to know my sexuality for?’ she wondered, trying to shakily write that she was straight. Ms. Arika would be embarrassed to talk about such things, after all.
With one last glance around the room, Kiyo debated whether to keep anything here. She was certain the investigation would find the blood under the carpet. So, she might as well take that back with her. Let them think that was where the killing happened.
Artfully, she broke several objects in the room, and overturned furniture. In her professional opinion, it was now looking like a fight had happened in here. She rolled up her carpet and kicked open the door. Miwa wouldn’t have cared what evidence was left while dragging him out for the pigs, she decided.
As she walked back to the house she had been living in to put her carpet away, she wondered if it would be better to ask one of the kids to deliver a vase of flowers to Karoa and Araki Kataka this evening and let their fright spread the darkness a little more.
‘Yes,’ she decided as she got to the door, ‘that’s exactly what I am going to do.’
